Drop Off/Pick-UP

Ensuring Drop-Off and Pick-Up Safety at Horace Mann School

Dear HM Families,
Enclosed are instructions about getting to and from school this year. There are suggested walking routes by neighborhood, as well as drop-off and pickup rules. There is also a list of bus stops and a bus application. The bus application should be printed, filled out, and either returned to the school or dropped off at the transportation office. You should fill out a bus application if you live in a neighborhood listed on the bus routes below and/or if your child will need transportation to the Boys and Girls Club.

Also, just to let you know...the city has new crosswalks to paint in a few areas (Linwood/Craft, near Albemarle footbridges, etc)....they are aware of the needs and have plans to get this done before the start of school.
If you have questions about any of this, please email mark_nardelli@newton.k12.ma.us

General Safety Rules

General Safety Rules

  • Never leave an unattended vehicle running. This is illegal in Massachusetts and is extremely dangerous at a school.
  • Never leave a child unattended in a car, not even for a minute.
  • No stopping in the handicap spaces or the adjacent loading areas for any reason – without a handicapped placard. This is State Law.
  • No stopping at the entrance to the teacher parking area.
  • Do not double park.
  • Drop-off/pick-up only in the blue zone or from a designated, marked parking space on Albemarle Road. Dropping children in traffic lanes is not only unlawful, it is dangerous.

Blue Zone Rules

  • Parking is prohibited in the Blue Zone at the following times:
    –  7:50 AM to 9:05 AM
    –  12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
    –  2:30 PM to 3:30 PM
  • It is considered parking if you are in the Blue Zone for more than one
minute. According to the Newton City ordinance authorizing the Blue Zone, stopping in the Blue Zone for student pick-up is limited to one minute only.
  • Vehicles may not be left unattended in the Blue Zone during the “blue zone times” for any reason.
  • Vehicles violating the Blue Zone are subject to a $25 traffic ticket from Newton police.

Safety Suggestions

  • If you need to stop for more than the one minute limit, or arrive early to pick up your child, please park in the ample parking area on Albemarle Road.
  • To avoid Blue Zone traffic, consider walking your child to school. You can join with other parents in your neighborhood to create a “walking bus” – an adult who meets children at an appointed place at an appointed time and walks the group to school. This is great exercise for you and your child.
  • Remember, no child is ever left alone after school. Teachers stay with children until they are picked up. If you are late arriving for pick up, the child will go to the school office to wait for you.
